In March 2020, the provincial government committed to fund a new, centrally located school to serve the King George, Pleasant Hill, and Princess Alexandra school communities.
For planning purposes, Saskatoon Public Schools is calling it the City Centre project and the new school will provide the state-of-the-art facility that students deserve. The project budget is $29 million. The school will have a capacity for 600 students, with an anticipated initial enrolment of 400-500 students. At a meeting held June 1, 2021, trustees approved the current site of Princess Alexandra School as the location of the new school. The target opening date is September 2024.
The project is being pursued to provide the best for students. The first job of the school division is to serve our students and provide safe and supportive learning environments. This can be best accomplished through a new school for these three neighbourhoods. Saskatoon Public Schools is working with the province to design a school that will meet the needs of the community it will serve, and the design process will involve comprehensive consultation with staff, students, families, and community partners.
The school division is in discussions with the City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Tribal Council on partnering for the project. A joint-use facility would provide community space and meet the needs of not only students, but also families and other community members. While no formal partnership is in place, both have expressed a high level of interest in the joint project. There may be opportunity for other partners as planning continues.
Saskatoon Public Schools has placed great value on maintaining the more than century-old King George and Pleasant Hill schools and the nearly 60-year-old Princess Alexandra, however the maintenance required for these aging facilities totals $68 million. This amount is impossible for the school division to cover and results in less-than-ideal learning environments for students.
It is expected that several options for the redevelopment of King George and Pleasant Hill schools, and their respective sites, will be considered, in consultation with the local community and other relevant stakeholders. This will be integral to the successful outcome for the entire project.
