November 01, 2018

BoardHighlightsOct30.jpgSaskatoon Public Schools recorded its 10th consecutive year of enrolment growth with 25,209 students registered in kindergarten to Grade 12, an increase of 318 students from 2017.

As of Sept. 30, there were 16,251 students attending the division’s elementary schools and 8,654 attending secondary schools.

Trustees were told during the Oct. 30 Board of Education meeting that 1,852 kindergarten students enrolled this fall, the second-highest kindergarten enrolment ever. The number of students enrolled in French immersion was 2,663, an increase of 145. The division has 2,870 students who require English as an additional language support, up slightly from 2017.

Other highlights from the meeting were:

  • Trustee Ray Morrison was elected chair by acclamation during the board’s inaugural meeting. “I take this responsibility very seriously, and I believe that each of us sitting at this table has much to offer the board as a whole,” Morrison said. “Through the last year we have continued to take a leadership role in public education, both in the city and in the province, and we will continue to do that as we move forward.”
  • The new, fully accessible playground at John Dolan School was highlighted during the Celebrating Excellence portion of the meeting. An inclusive playground has been a dream of the John Dolan community. The school provides a specialized learning environment for students who require intensive supports.
