Academic, extracurricular programs to engage every student

April 11, 2016

linkcrew_web.jpgWalter Murray Collegiate boasts a wide range of programs and extracurricular offerings and a diverse student population attracted by the many opportunities available to students.

As one of only two  comprehensive collegiates in the Saskatoon Public Schools’ system, we house a number of system-wide programs and proudly offer a multitude of elective courses of interest to any student.

Walter Murray is a diverse community welcoming all types of learners. As a comprehensive collegiate, our size and facility allows for the broadest range of programming and extracurricular offerings in Saskatoon. We provide our students with whatever they need most to be successful, whether it is appropriate academic challenge or support. The result: outstanding students who earn valuable scholarships and academic opportunities around the globe; young people who receive a solid grounding in the skilled trades and go on to apprenticeships, further training, and job offers in every trade or field you can imagine; and impressive leaders and solid citizens who make a difference in the broader community.

A student enrollment of approximately 1,300 students allows us the ability to offer a number of sections in a wide variety of courses and we welcome all types of learners. Special needs students and those who require enrichment, modification, second language support, or hands-on opportunities will find courses and extra-curricular offerings suited to their interests and abilities. We truly are the collegiate of choice in Saskatoon.

We offer classes in all core subject courses, as well as courses in computer technology, computer science, robotics, German, Japanese and French, creative writing and more. As a comprehensive high school, Walter Murray also offers full courses over four years in woods construction, electronics, mechanics, welding, machining, commercial cooking and interior design along with specialized courses.

Walter Murray is one of three collegiates that host the school division’s designated program for gifted students. The Saskatoon Public Schools Academically Gifted Education (SAGE) program is for students who have high ability, an excellent academic record and a strong work ethic. The program for Grade 9-12 students is based on the integration of concepts across subject areas and the development of skills such as critical and creative thinking, communication and presentation, synthesis and analysis. This integration and interdisciplinary approach allows SAGE program students to master subject content.

French Immersion is one of several important enrichment opportunities at Walter Murray Collegiate. Students who have been successful in elementary or late immersion programs, or who have equivalent fluency, are well-suited for the collegiate immersion program. Each year, students will be scheduled for three to five courses (including some in math and science) where French is the language of instruction. Students who complete the French Immersion program in its entirety receive a bilingual certificate.

The Fine Arts Program is at the top of its class. The band program offers students tremendous opportunities in development and performance and each grade level has its own individual band, while our choir program involves approximately 100 students each year. Our visual and graphic arts programs, including photography, have seen many talented students develop and showcase their impressive artistic abilities.

Outside of class time, we offer a full complement of extracurricular programs, including a multitude of clubs, sports teams and activities. There truly are opportunities for everyone at Walter Murray Collegiate.
