Students tell trustees how e-journalism supports learning, reconciliation

March 15, 2018

Boardmeeting031318_news.jpgA unique partnership between Aden Bowman Collegiate and the Constable Robin Cameron Education Complex (CRCEC) at Beardy's and Okemasis Cree Nation is giving students a new voice.

The Celebrating Excellence portion of the March 13 Board of Education meeting saw students and staff from Aden Bowman Collegiate joined with counterparts from CRCEC to talk about the learning done as part of the One Thunderous Voice: An Intercultural E-Journalism Team project.

The students are motivated to broaden and deepen their social justice knowledge by documenting and responding to events such as Think Indigenous and the National Rural Education Congress through their journalism. As they make meaning and journalism together, students clarify their own purposes, truths, intentions, and capacities in the "ethical space" of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.

Other highlights of the board meeting included

  • Trustees approved a motion directing administration to hire up to 10 educational assistants for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year to support the work being done with students.
  • The board received an update on its Collegiate Renewal strategic priority and its current emphasis on addressing the learning needs of high school students by adapting instruction and providing support to ensure student success. The update from staff shared results in terms of credit attainment, students on track to graduate, and feedback collected as part of a recent student survey. Data shows that 10 per cent more Indigenous Grade 10 students are on track to graduate compared to last year.
