Board of Education learns how project recognizes Métis history

november_news.jpgA unique partnership between Aden Bowman Collegiate, Saskatoon Transit and the Métis community was highlighted during the Celebrating Excellence portion of the Nov. 27 Board of  Education meeting. 

A bus shelter located at the school was transformed into a piece of art that recognizes the history of the school’s location as the site of a Métis community garden. The bus shelter was designed by students in consultation with Métis Senator Elder Nora Cummings, and its unique, metal-cut walls represent and share the story. Other highlights from the meeting were:

Trustees received an update on mathematics education. Teachers are expanding instructional strategies to build number sense and provide support to First Nation and Métis students and English language learners. Gains in computational fluency among students, and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of teachers and students, are being realized as a result of professional learning opportunities for teachers. The update shared examples of mathematics leadership and its impact on student learning.

Board Chair Ray Morrison was recognized for receiving the Saskatchewan School Boards Association Award of Distinction. Morrison has served on the Saskatoon Board of Education since 2003 and has been board chair since 2006. Read the full story at saskatoonpublicschools.ca
