Motto, logo inspired by the words and work of school's namesake

November 07, 2017

SFSgrade8_news.jpgWhen students and staff at Sylvia Fedoruk School considered what the team name, logo and motto for their new school would be they wound up being inspired by the work and words of their school's namesake.

"Have dreams, set goals, then work hard to achieve your goals — after all, it has worked for me," were the words of Sylvia Fedoruk, the scientist, athlete and leader who lifelong commitment to Saskatoon and Saskatchewan was recognized by the naming of the new school located in the Evergreen neighbourhood.

Consultations with students, staff and the larger school community that began long before school opened its doors in September resulted in the selection of the of school's team name — Fusion — and its accompanying motto Dream, Discover, Achieve.

"When our first Sylvia Fedoruk School teachers met with Evergreen families back in February we asked them for attributes for an amazing school as well as ideas for a logo," said Principal Miranda Low.

In gatherings with future Sylvia Fedoruk students near the end of the 2016-17 school year the names Fusion and Foxes were the top-two choices. Students chose the winner through a vote. The selection of the Dream, Discover, Achieve motto was made by the school's staff and the words will be used as the foundation for building the school's belief statement.

The logo design went through a number of revisions with input from staff, school community council, playground committee and students until the school's first-ever Grade 8 class made the final selection. It will appear on the school's communication material, its website and on students in the form of school clothing and team jerseys.
