Students display leadership, learning with Global Goals poster competition

May 25, 2017

postergroup_news.jpgStudents in Saskatoon Public Schools elementary schools are sharing their learning about the United Nations 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development thanks to a division-wide poster competition.

In 2016, Sumaya Murabit, a student at Roland Michener School, suggested a poster competition to raise awareness of the Global Goals. Students in Grades 7 and 8 were invited to create a poster highlighting one of the goals along with a summary of why the goal is important to them.

Submissions were received from 14 schools for this year's second annual competition and a committee of school division and community representatives chose the top-17 posters representing each of the goals.

The students' work was showcased during a school assembly May 24 where the poster by Jordyn Guan, a Grade 8 student at Roland Michener, was announced as the overall winner of the competition. Her poster highlighted the goal of Quality Education.

The poster noted that Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states "everyone has a right to education." It identified several key results of education including: education reduces poverty and increases income; education leads to better health; education prevents inequalities and injustice; and education drives sustainable growth.

"It is so important that we grab on to these goals with both hands and bring them to light," Sumaya Murabit told her fellow students during the assembly.

The students were joined in the celebration by Mayor Charlie Clark who told students that "now, more than ever, we need global citizens."

Dr. Alaa Murabit, a UN high level commissioner and global goals advocate and a Saskatoon Public Schools graduate, talked to students about how they can support the work of the Global Goals initiative.

Photos of the 17 posters created by the finalists can be viewed in this photo gallery.
