February 13, 2019

Students in Saskatoon Public Schools will begin the 2019-20 school year immediately following the Labour Day weekend.

The first day of classes for students in both elementary and high school will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, according to the school year calendar approved by the Board of Education during its meeting held Feb. 12.

The calendar represents a total of 195 days with a minimum of 950 hours of instruction for students. The school year calendar is developed in consultation with stakeholder groups as well as other Saskatchewan school divisions.

The calendar includes a 16-day winter break around Christmas and New Year's Day, a nine-day break in February that includes the Family Day holiday and a 10-day spring break in conjunction with the Easter long weekend. The final day of classes for all students will be June 25, 2020.

The calendar includes the dates of professional development days, semester start dates for high school students as well as statutory holidays. Key dates include:

Other highlights from the Feb. 12 Board of Education meeting were:
  • Students from École Henry Kelsey and a representative of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society made a presentation to trustees calling for the implementation of no idling zones for vehicles around schools. The students highlighted the effects of vehicle exhaust and identified benefits around health, climate change mitigation and supporting student-led initiatives. The board asked administration to examine the proposal.
  • The division's partnership with the Kinsmen Hockey League (KHL) was highlighted during Celebrating Excellence. The KHL provides an opportunity for youth in community schools to play organized hockey. The league encourages players to attend school regularly and to develop their skills on and off the ice. The KHL is funded by the Kinsmen Club and school and community volunteers help the program operate smoothly.
