Lakeview recognized as top school fundraiser for Terry Fox Run

April 11, 2022

Lakeview Terry Fox2.jpgOne day each fall the pathways around École Lakeview School are busy with hundreds of kids out for a walk. In most years, students empty out the school doors paired up with their care partner as they walk together in recognition of a man whose story resonates with students from kindergarten to Grade 8.

Raising funds to support cancer research through the Terry Fox Run has been a tradition at Lakeview for more than 20 years, but the 2021 version of the school's fundraising effort is one of its most memorable.

According to the Terry Fox Foundation, Lakeview was the top supporter among Saskatchewan schools during last year's event. The school raised $9,419.20, almost 10 per cent of the total funds raised by elementary schools provincewide.

Principal Shalene Herron said the school's teachers do a lot of teaching around Terry Fox and his story as a Canadian hero resonates with students. The school's annual assembly helps students learn about the importance of the cause through the words of cancer survivors and special guests.

In 2021, Terry's brother, Fred, made a video for the school that was viewed during a virtual assembly. There were many conversations with students that resulted from the Terry Fox Foundation's video that shares Terry's journey. Its message struck a chord with students, along with many parents who attended the virtual assembly.

Lakeview Terry Fox1.jpgThe school has a long commitment to the event, raising an estimated $60,000 over the years. The money is important but sharing the story of Terry Fox's personal sacrifice and his dedication to the cause is also an important learning opportunity for students.

Fox's position as a Canadian role model offers an excellent opportunity for students to learn about doing something positive for others. By putting into action the lessons from his story, students learn about social action and how it feels good to help others and be a part of something bigger.

Recognition as the top school fundraiser in the province is a proud moment for everyone involved, not because of the amount raised, but because of the commitment of students, families, and staff to supporting such a worthy cause.
