Trustees hear how Project Buddy connects students at Evan Hardy

January 22, 2019

CEJan15_news.jpgStudents and staff from Evan Hardy Collegiate shared an innovative approach to building the school community during the Celebrating Excellence portion of the Jan. 15 Board of Education meeting.

Soul Ambassadors is a group of students who act as ambassadors for Evan Hardy Collegiate in the school community. Soul Ambassadors look for ways to make the community a better place through volunteer work or fundraising.

Grade 12 student Harkirat Bhullar shared the group’s Project Buddy initiative, which was the recipient of a SaskTel I Am Stronger grant. The project connects Soul Ambassadors with newcomer students.  Principal Wendy Benson and several students who benefitted from the program were also part of the presentation. More information about Project Buddy is available on the I Am Stronger website.

Other highlights from the meeting were:

  • Catherine Sun, a 2018 graduate from Centennial Collegiate, was recognized as the recipient of Saskatoon Board of Education’s 2017-18 Award of Excellence. Each collegiate nominates a student for the award, which is presented annually to a Grade 12 graduate who best exemplifies the goals and values of Saskatoon Public Schools. Sun received a $5,000 scholarship presented during a luncheon in early January.
  • Trustees received the results of Canadian Achievement Tests conducted during the fall of 2018. Students in grades 4, 8, and 10 complete the test annually. The results of the assessment are used by principals and teachers as an aid for school-level strategic and instructional planning and at the division level to direct staff development planning and inform the division’s strategic direction.

Reports and information presented at board meetings can be found at saskatoonpublicschools.ca. The next meeting of the Board of Education is Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
