The School Day

Elementary School

  • Generally, the school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., from Monday to Friday. There may be slight variations between schools.

  • Daily schedules of classes and activities differ from school to school.

  • In elementary schools, students may have different teachers for instruction in different subject areas.

  • Elementary schools do not have a cafeteria. Students may bring a lunch to school or go home for lunch. Teachers or designated supervisors are responsible for all students who remain on school property during the lunch hour. There is a fee of $100/year for students to stay at school for lunch. 

High School

  • Generally, the school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., from Monday to Friday. There may be slight variations between schools. 

  • Daily schedules of classes and activities differ from school to school.

  • In high schools, students have several teachers for instruction in subject areas.

  • In most high schools, the academic year
    is divided into two semesters. 

    • Semester 1: September to January

    • Semester 2: February to June

    • Final exams are written at the end of each
      semester. In schools with semesters, there may be as many as five or six classes per day taught in specific blocks of time. Blocks may range from 45 minutes to 75 minutes, depending on the school and its timetable structure.

  • Some high schools have a cafeteria. Students may purchase a lunch, bring a lunch to school or go home for lunch. Teachers or designated supervisors are responsible for all students who remain on school property during the lunch hour. There is a fee of $100/year for students to stay at school for lunch.
