Sherbrooke Elder shares story of how iGen changed her life

February 25, 2016

iGenElder.JPGThe iGen Program profoundly affects the lives of all who are involved.

During a Saskatoon Public Schools' school opening celebration, the program's teacher, a student a parent, and a Sherbrooke Community Centre Elder shared how the program's unique learning approach has affected their lives.

"Grade 6 was a year that I will never forget in my life," said student Mya Miller. "I learned stories and skills that we life-changing and made connections with Elders too. iGen gives me the opportunity to learn in a healthy environment and is a great way to meet new people."

Jodi Grant, an Elder at Sherbrooke Community Centre, shared a particularly profound and emotional testimony during the event. Grant, a former university professor with a doctorate in literacy, became a program mentor during the first year of the iGen classroom.

"The iGen program had a profound effect on my life," Grant said. "I had a catharsis in that I went from a daily dread that I was still alive and breathing through one more supremely boring and pain-filled day . . . I was able through iGen to anticipation of an awesome day that was full of life and joy."

"iGen saved me; and that, in fact, is the truth . . . it took those sixth grade kids to bring life back into focus for me."
