Summer Reading Camp

In August 2014, nearly 200 children in Saskatoon Public Schools participated in a summer reading camp. Through a financial donation from Brian and Kathy Turnquist to the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation, children experienced two weeks of reading strategies, nutritious snacks, games, body breaks and family reading activities. The camp theme was, “What if…” exploring ways that animals and humans are similar and different. Four lucky schools had animal visits from the Saskatoon Forestry Farm and Zoo.

Two teachers from Vincent Massey School’s camp, Ms. Trudy Williams and Mrs. Jacqueline Hapke, will outline their highlights from camp, sharing how camp works to eliminate the ‘summer slippage’ many children experience. Two students will elaborate on the impact of attending summer camp describing how their reading confidence and competence improved.
