Summer Reading Camps
Ensuring our early readers receive additional support during the summer months became a reality for 144 grade one to three children in Saskatoon Public Schools. Eleven schools hosted “Summer Reading Camps” from August 6th to 19th. The funds for the camps were provided through a generous donation from the Turnquist family to our Saskatoon Public Schools’ Foundation. Using the Picture Word Inductive Model and components of Leveled Literacy Intervention, twenty-two teachers spent the mornings creating rich and varied literacy tasks for students. In addition to reading and writing, children also received a healthy snack and participated in physical activities to stimulate brain learning receptiveness. The two-week camp culminated with a trip to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm and Zoo. Children and their families arrived on a bus, shared a picnic lunch together and then toured the zoo before receiving a certificate of completion and a Saskatoon Public School tote filled with ‘just right’ books.

Sharing her reflections as a Summer Reading Camp instructor was Mrs. Tracey Brennan-Bailey, grade one teacher at Vincent Massey Community School.

Thank you to our Foundation Executive Director – Carla Loney-Tindall for her assistance in supporting the camp and promoting Saskatoon Public Schools’ literacy priority within our community. These funds, the enthusiasm of our children and families and the commitment from our teachers made this camp a success.
