Tipi project offers unique learning opportunity for Victoria students

November 22, 2017

VictoriaTipi_news.jpgA tipi erected on the grounds of École Victoria School is a visual representation of both student learning and a commitment to reconciliation by the school and its community.

Students in the Grade 7/8 class at Victoria worked with Donnie Speidel, a cultural resource liaison with Saskatoon Public Schools, to hand-paint the tipi. The project is an experiential learning opportunity for the students, providing them with hands-on lessons about Indigenous history and customs.

The tipi, which was provided through a partnership between the Broadway Theatre and Wanuskewin Heritage Park, will provide a unique learning space for students. Its prominent location in the neighbourhood will hopefully create conversations among both students and the broader community.

"It's an opportunity to bring folks together through the education system," Speidel said. "It celebrates a lot of the different perspectives that we are working on in education, to try to bring awareness and bring understanding among some of the original learnings that you would have found here in Treaty 6 territory.

"I think it has a lot of potential to bring people together, to have discussions and create new learning opportunities. I look forward to that."
