Board of Education meeting recognizes teacher Nancy Barr

June 26, 2017

barr_news.jpgThe contributions of teacher Nancy Barr were recognized during the evening's Celebrating Excellence segment.

Barr, a teacher at Brevoort Park School, was honoured earlier this year by the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission and the Think Good Do Good organization as a teacher who embodies qualities of understanding, compassion and leadership in the classroom. David Arnot, chief commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, and Heather Fenyes of Think Good Do Good were on hand to speak to Barr's contributions.

Read more about Barr and the recognition she received on our Celebrating Excellence page.

Other highlights from the meeting were:

  • Trustees approved the board's annual operating and capital budget for the fiscal year Sept. 1, 2017 to Aug. 31, 2018. The budget includes expenses of $259.4 million, which is down $0.8 million over last year while opening four new elementary schools this September. Following a significant cut to operational funding from the provincial government, the budget includes several staffing changes and reductions in services. More information on the budget is available at saskatoonpublicschools.ca.
  • Year-end reports for the board's Literacy for Life and Collegiate Renewal learning priorities were presented to trustees. The reports highlight the work and accomplishments in the areas of student learning and achievement, literacy, culturally responsive education and teacher professional development. The reports are available on the division website under Reports & Publications.
  • Trustees heard that the four Saskatoon joint-use school projects are on schedule and the school division will receive the keys on June 30. Chief Whitecap School in the Stonebridge neighbourhood, Colette Bourgonje School in Rosewood, Ernest Lindner School in Hampton Village, and Sylvia Fedoruk School in Evergreen will welcome students in September.

Reports and information presented at board meetings can be found at www.saskatoonpublicschools.ca. The next meeting of the Board of Education is Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
