Opportunity to Learn math is defined by four constructs (see list below). Student responses to questions related to each construct are then measured against a rubric that describes situations that would be typical if the student had "sufficient" opportunity to learn in that construct.

  1. Preparation and commitment to learn
    • This construct looks at the extent to which students answers on the OTL questions imply that they display the characteristics of highly committed learners identified in research literature.
  2. Persistence in difficulty
    • This construct looks at the extent to which students persist in trying to solve difficult math problems.
  3. Home support for learning (in general)
    • This construct examines the overall learning environment at students' homes.
  4. Home support for learning math
    • This construct examines the extent to which they have support at home to learn math.
